I guess the message tag function is something that is being testing out as well? What is it? Whats its relation to labels? And why is just introduced in a production environment without explanation - making an already messy situation even worse?

Functionakty wise tags are different to labels in that they are a generally free form user taxonomy. They require therefor a bit more discipline when applied in order to prevent them becoming an unmanageable list of very individual categories. If applied correctly they can be helpful as a horizontal navigation layer linking conversations across boards and categories. We are currently looking to use them in a limited capability to capture the system and version info.
