Are you trying to use a a multi-plane roof?

You need to split it into single planes.

It can't be that.  There is no Roof Surface to select if you have not added the Accessories Library.    However, reading your method carefully, I see that you might be disabling the Roof Surfacer.  Your description says:  "i **select my roof** go to Design extras, Roof accessories access the roof surfacing **tool select the roof I want**  [ooops - you just disabled it when you selected the roof the second time] click ok and nothing happens, the roof surface doesn't apply"    Or did you mean you selected the Roof Surface you want - then clicked ok. ?
