Hi! are there a simple way to keep different design studies under the same model and the same layer combinations we use for the project?

Use Hotlinked Modules.
A Hotlinked module has a master layer which controls the visibility of all elements in the Hotlinked Module.
So you would place the different design alternatives on different master layers.
