How do you turn on and off your layers in the trace reference???

Using different layer combos in your work view and in the Trace reference will slow down display, though.

Another way of controlling what appears in the Trace Reference is selecting in the Trace Reference Palette what element types you want displayed. That is also a filtering capability.
This options is available only on the Trace Reference Palette. It is not available in the Trace & Reference button on the standard Toolbar.

This is true. Try selecting a view from the project map to improve performance. Plus, layers will respond to what is currently visible in the view you are working in.
