Maybe the title is wrong.
Now there are more possibilities to make elevation color.
I tried hier with shadow and gradient.
How about?

actually it's a great idea.
not sure how would you define the gradient origins though...

I had to fill gradient manually (to change with old one is impossible.)
But it makes very easy with magic tool.
First of all the shadow in AC10 shows transparent effect (realistic shadow).
Many graphical effect in Vector is now possible, within AC 10.
Now I am trying with new drawing tool to make more effect.

sorry, I thought you want to have this as a new feature in AC11 or something like you could define material with gradient fill mapping...
I've just misunderstood....

Really? How?

you can't. but rob was suggesting the possibility for a new feature. seems reasonable, but i can't think that i'd use it. i don't see why the origin/direction of a gradient fill can't be controlled in the same way as a normal fill when used as material vectorial hatching. ('Align 3D Texture'>etc...)

The fill in AC has not only graphical functionn but also several other function with calculation and so on.
To fullfill these functions with gradient is maybe impossible.
