City-model: Convert archicad to array of numbers

Hi,

hello to everyone. I'm new and I've never used a CAD program.

I might get a file of a city model in the Archicad 7 format, so a 3D model of the city.

For my purpose, I need to have the average street width, the distribution of building heights, and the fraction of buildings compared to plants for example in a certain region. So what I want to do is to put a 2d (x and y direction) lattice over the city with a certain spacing. Then I need the average value of the things mentioned before for each grid cell.

Any idea whether this could be accomplished. Is there a library which I could include in a program I write? Free? Running under linux?

(would the dxf or dwg format be better suited?)

THANKS a lot!

Placing a grid won't be a problem. You just draw over the 2d model space.

For the average road widths, whether you're autocad, dwg or dxf theres only one way of measuring, & thats by measuring each one individually.

Theres a tape measure function, so you'll be able to measure the distance, but it'll be a bit of a slog if its a whole city!
