am receiving an error message as follows:
"maximum length of linked elements reached". Anybody know what that means. Perhaps coincidentally, regen time for elevations has gone way up.

Do you have nested XREFs or modules, i.e. a xref that contains a xref that contains another... I do not know how many "levels" they can have, but from the message it seems that you just discovered it.

That's not it. No xrefs or modules in the project at all....

Wild guess: Lots of SEOs perhaps? I've seen that cause regen slowdowns. Never seen that message, though.

Not many seo's. Maybe six or seven throughout the project. A thought however.....I sometimes put the cutting element on a separate layer then turn it off when not using it, so it won't show in the elev. Do the operator and target both have to be on a visible layer?

No, in fact a separate SEO layer, often set to wire-frame is typical. You need to keep the operator in the file and not moved if the operator is not part of the visible model e.g a roof (operator) trimming walls(target).
