TIF issue/question

I have some scanned D-size sheets that are completely black when I am zoomed out to see the extent of the "figure" that has been placed. Though when I zoom in I can see the detail. Is there a setting that I can adjust, such that when I am zoomed out to the extents I can see the "figure"/drawing in its entirety without it looking like a large black rectangle? Or it something with my system or graphics card?

Hi-res tifs can be like that.

I found a nice solution. Convert the TIF's to PSD files. They work really nicely in AC. Though my file sizes are huge but hopefully that is just temporarily until I get rid of the PSD files.
