Hole in column

How to use the opening tool with the column element type? Is there a way of creating holes for the mep routings to pass?

I don't believe the opening tool works on columns. You could use an solid element operation to cut a hole with the subtract function. Or you could use a beam or other object in the shape (complex profile) of the hole you want, to "cut" the column by using a stronger building material and putting it on a hidden layer.
