Its just a problem with the overall-performance of Archicad - which slows down massively at using too much profiles this way. When using this, it should be only used in detail-level drawing-scale or - in 3D - only, when the cam in near the object. I doubt that the 3D-engine is capable of doing this.
Recently, i mad a GDL for the Slab-addon - which allows to get a whole Building in a view simple klicks. In the mass of windows - it slows down the performance massively just at using normal rectangular shapes.
So in summary, its possible to develop this, but at a certain ammount of used profiles, Archicad gets too slow to work with.

Thinking about using many profiles, does the actual profile, given similar surface area make much of a difference?

I'd say, we – above all as users – should not think in "ways how to...)... do not mainly consider problems, difficulties and so on...
... but in results.
With the possibilities we've now in Archicad I feel so limited in my working process, in my way of representing drawings, details... sometimes it is not possible to get "true" display, especially of window- and door-parts (but a´ lie...).
There must be a change!
